PAINTING

CONSERVATION AND RESTORATION

At Scalpel’n’Brush we understand the cultural and historical value that paintings hold.

During the conservation and restoration’s process, the artworks could be subjected to a variety of treatments.

Interventions on Painting Conservation

Over time, paintings can accumulate dirt, grime and discoloured varnishes, obscuring their original beauty. We employ various specialised methods to gently remove unwanted layers without causing any harm to the artwork’s delicate surfaces.

Paintings are subject to various structural problems such as flaking paint, canvas distortions, or loose stretchers. Our team excels in stabilising and repairing these issues, employing consolidation techniques, adhesive treatments and other processes to ensure the painting’s structural integrity.

Canvases with tears or punctures require delicate repair. We employ techniques such a tear mending, strip-lining, or full lining in order to stabilise and strengthen the canvas, ensuring the artwork’s longevity and minimising the visibility of the damage.

Applying a new layer of varnish not only enhances the vibrancy and colour saturation of a painting but also provides protection against environmental factors. As conservators, we apply appropriate varnishes, carefully matching the aesthetic intent of the artist. If required, we can also perform retouching to fill in the areas of loss, ensuring an harmonious integration with the original artwork.

In addition to remedial treatments, we also emphasise the importance of preventive conservation. We offer advice and guidance on proper handling, display and storage techniques to minimise risks of damage caused by environmental factors such as light, temperature, humidity or pests.

Our team is available for consultations and can assist in developing collection management plans, including conservation schedules, condition assessments, and risk management strategies. We work with museums, galleries and institutions to safeguard their valuable art collections.
